How Brake Drums Work

It starts with you pressing your foot against the brake pedal. The master brake cylinder responds by sending brake fluid through the brake lines and hoses. The pressure of the fluid causes the brake shoe to fasten to the brake drum and produce the friction, or resistance, needed to slow -- and eventually stop – your wheels.

The Four Types of Brake Drum Systems

Regular brake drums: in this setup, the shoes press against the brake drum’s inner surface.

Clasp brake drums: the brake shoes press against the outside of the drum in this type.

Pinch brake drums: this type has two shoes that press the brake drum between them.

Band brake drums: this kind features a flexible belt, rather than brake shoes, which wraps around the drum.

How to Recognize Brake Drum Problems

Eventually, though, brake drums can wear out. When that happens, you can’t depend on your vehicle to stop on command. Signs of failure include:

• A bouncing or vibrating brake pedal
• You hear odd noises when you brake
